In all major cities we see empty lots just sitting there unused. These parcels of land could be amazing urban gardens giving organic produce to the community. We also work hard to keep our lawns green but we are not cows that eat grass. So lets see things differently. Wherever you live there is potential for growing delicious organic food, whether outside your house or indoors, all we need is a container for soil, some seeds and some care. There are several urban garden projects out there but today I want to focus on Ron Finley’s LA Green Grounds. They are all volunteers and they are helping changing the city into an edible garden bringing the community together in their Dig-In planting parties. But let Ron tell you about it.

of edible plants being incorporated into our daily landscapes and city architectures.

So many landscape designers choose the sterile, prickly or just colorful route. When I first had the honor of seeing Pam Warhurst speak on how she started a volunteer program to turn vacant lots and unused land into edible gardens that can be shared by the community, I was thrilled. Her concept has grown rapidly and similar programs are sweeping Europe and other countries.

This short TED Talk shows a brilliant women who has a vision and keeps it alive by empowering individuals to connect in a basic, balanced and loving way, so they can change the narrative of food in their community.

One of the big problems with small space is that it is harder to grow a garden. Luckily there are some creative people out there. Brooklyn native, Mike Lieberman (a.k.a. Urban Organic Gardner), has a whole site dedicated to showing us how to create the perfect urban gardens even if the space is limited.

Urban Garden Locations

Here is a great look at some of the ways Mike was able to overcome the limited space in his apartments and grow quite a bit of good food.

Apartment Balcony Garden

Mike explains his balcony garden that uses his self watering containers.

Fire Escape

If you have a fire escape you might be able to grow some of your goodies there as well.

The most important thing to remember is that there are always creative solutions to space. Get some more ideas and advice by following the Urban Organic Gardner on Google+, Facebook and Twitter. What creative solutions have you found in your living space?

It’s often a good idea to prepare yourself for the future. We like to make sure we have what we would need to survive just in case something goes awry. This includes food (seeds), shelter (tents), and clothing (lightweight, waterproof). Today we’re going to talk about the seeds.

What is a Seed Bank?

A seed bank is a store of seeds that can be used in an emergency for sprouting and/or growing. These seeds should be a variety that grow well in your geographical area. It’s worth it to have many seeds that you can grow quickly and some larger staples that take a little bit longer. These seeds should be stored in a completely dry, room temperature or cooler container that is easy to access.

What Kind of Emergency?

There is a large bag of situations that can be considered emergencies where you would need to use your seeds. If the power is out for an extended period of time there will be a lot of food in the stores going to waste in the coolers. Many nature disasters leave whole communities homeless and without transportation. You may lose part of your income and need to save more money by eating out of your garden. There are many situations that warrant an emergency supply of seeds.

Where Do I Get the Seeds?

Great question! There are a few sources for heirloom seeds that can help you build your own awesome seed bank. One of the most popular seed suppliers/seed banks is Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Here is the founder, Jeremiah “Jere” Gettle explaining the vision.

Do you have seeds in your emergency kit? If so, which seeds did you choose?

Spring is coming up and what better way to get it started than with some seeds? The process of starting your seeds in pots (and other growing containers) before planting them in the garden is known as seed starts. There are a great variety of seeds available to get started with in your own garden. We recommend some of the amazing heirloom seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.

In this video from Garden Time, Sue Berg from New Dimension Seed explains how different seeds will grow best in certain pots. You can be creative with your pots to help get some great starts for cheap.

Pro tip: Try to thin out your seeds so they aren’t fighting themselves to grow.
