Roland is a multi-faceted, jack-of-all trade, but a master of none kind of guy. He’s the co-founder of KALE U’s NYC chapter; a performing drummer and percussionist, a passionate advocate for social and environmental justice, an educator, and an organic food junkie. You can usually tell Roland is around by either the sounds of his drum or by the satiating aroma of his culinary prowess.
Roland’s journey toward optimum health was arduous. Having grown up in a somewhat traditional Hungarian household, he was subjected to a typical (meat heavy) central-European diet for most of his adolescent years. It wasn’t till a few years ago (and several cases of food poisoning) that Roland began to charge of his life by making some major changes. First and foremost, he took the power into his own hands and got informed about some critical issues (namely factory farming, GMOs, and veggie/veganism). Subsequently, all red meats were removed from his diet. Getting over beef and steak was relatively easy; besides he’s lactose intolerant. The hardest part was eliminating turkey, chicken and fish. It took some time to wean off of those old staples, but he was eventually liberated because of a new found love for avocados and kale. On January 16th, 2012 Roland was officially meat free and fully equipped to move forward. The 2 year mark is fast approaching and he hasn’t looked back.
Eating a plant-based diet has profoundly changed Roland’s life. He’s in the best shape of his life and also the healthiest he’s ever been. He’s taken more responsibility for himself by knowing that the organic foods properly nourish the body. His culinary skills have drastically improved as well. Furthermore, he lives a guilt-free life knowing that he has drastically reduced his carbon footprint; all while preventing countless chickens, cows, veal, and turkeys from being slaughtered.
Roland is currently the media outreach intern at the Battery Urban Farm in NYC. There, his love of sustainability and organic farming has the necessary breathing room to flourish. He’s a natural educator. So, he greatly enjoys helping to facilitate enrichment visits from the thousands of young students that routinely visit the farm. Roland is also an outreach coordinator at EP Engineering. He helps facilitate expert to student outreach program. This usually consists of visiting public city high schools and teaching young peoples about energy conservation, energy auditing, and practical sustainable solutions.
“One of my core philosophies in life is to ‘keep it real.’ I’m pretty laid-back and avoid stress whenever possible. That being said, when it’s time to turn on serious mode, I am the most dedicated and ambitious person you’ll ever meet. Music has such an important role in the very fabric of my being. It allows me to express myself in a universal way, communicating a crucial message about oneness and empathy. It’s in my nature to step outside the box and be unique; spreading good vibes wherever I go. I have a lot of respect for people that are honest, humble, and willing to put othersbefore their own well-being. The purpose of my existence is to make a positive, lasting impact on my friends, family, and humanity as a whole.”
On top of being an environmentally conscious person and a foodie, Roland is a performing musician. He plays drums and percussion for several active and on-going projects. His most recent band is called Polluter. You can find them on www.soundcloud.com/polluter and below. Otherwise, you can check out some of his past groups: Peach Pie Zealot, THEOR3TIX, and the Funk Monks.
