Why do schools knowingly discourage creativity?
It’s important to learn and objectively look at why our school system and teachers are stuck in a system that clearly doesn’t work. It could be said that more harm than good is being done in the name of education because of the disconnect with encouraging creativity alone.
Talent in the younger generations
There is talent that needs to be encouraged and nurtured for us to build a future of creative problem solvers, artists, engineers and visionaries. The happiness, joy and love of our planet is dependent upon such a nurturing path. Schools the way we have set them up are not even close to being able to address a person’s true talents. The schools are however great at cranking out numbers of beaten down discouraged, and in most cases confused young minds. The internal conflict that many face upon graduation is depressing and contradictory toward a world that they hope is open and welcoming them as teacher’s learners and mapmakers, especially in the passionate field they seek. A revolution is inevitable in the education system.
Ken Robinson is a great speaker and his talks at TED are very insightful. These two videos show us how important it is to nurture our children’s creativity and to begin the transformation of education and join the new learning revolution.
