As you may know, Mimi Kirk was honored by PETA with the title “Sexiest Vegetarian over 50” a couple of years ago- now she’s 73, though she looks 43 and acts 23. Seriously, she’s hard to keep up with, folks and her pictures don’t even do her justice.
The four of us at Kale U spent hours with Mimi and her boyfriend Mike and it felt like minutes. (That’s always how we know we’re having a wonderful dinner party- there’s a feeling we could talk forever!) We touched on subjects that all of us are passionate about- of course the benefits of raw food, but also animals, travels, art, performance, web design, public speaking, black garlic, superfoods, juicers, favorite raw chefs, ozone, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Mimi’s vintage western game, health-related films, Hollywood, and so much more.
We laughed and enjoyed the evening and Mimi’s energy flowed like a fountain of knowledge and youth. We all love that she is passionate about health and sharing what she knows through her book and her public speaking. Mimi explained to us that she knew about the diseases and conditions that her family history disposed her to, but that she made a choice to willfully turn the other way, and she’s never looked back. While other people her age are starting to slow down, she’s still gaining speed and planning her adventures. She told us of an inspirational friend she met at the Raw Spirit Festival who celebrated his 110th birthday this year and is totally full of life and love, so much so that he’s planning on opening a restaurant in the coming year.
Ken made a raw Thai soup with spiralized zucchini noodles, nori rolls with pear and radish, avocado paste and sprouted nut pate, and for dessert Ken’s raw chocolate mousse and Mimi’s amazing Almond Pecan and Brazil Nut Truffle Balls! Doesn’t get much better than that.
Mimi’s cookbook Live Raw is such a joy- if you’ve gone raw and have been missing nachos, macaroni and cheese, fries with ketchup, enchiladas, lasagna or brownies, then you might just want to pick up this book. Joel and Suzanne coined it simultaneously “Gourmet-Simple!” because the flavor combinations are fabulous and the presentations are elegant, while the ingredients aren’t overwhelmingly numerous or exotic. Mike did an incredible job photographing the dishes for the book- each gorgeous photo makes you want to like the page. Reading the book, we can’t stop thinking about what to prepare next (even more so than normal.) Every dish reminds you why raw food is so awesome- it’s so simple and naturally delicious and nutritious.
Our So-Cal friends might like to know that Mimi will be participating later this month in a fabulous dinner/hotel/spa experience taking place at the Rancho Bernardo Inn on Friday March 30th, and that she will be speaking the previous day at San Diego Women’s Week, also in Rancho Bernardo. Maybe you’ll just have to stay two nights at the Inn, maybe get a little golf in?
