Junk Food Vegan

By: Joel Turner|February 23, 2012|Posted in: Nutrition

When I first decided to cut out meat and dairy I thought I would be eliminating all the unhealthy choices. Boy was I wrong!

Junk Food Vegan

vegan burger and friesThere are a lot of different choices that are still vegan even though they are very bad for your body. Hydrogenated oils, fried chips, greasy french fries and many more things are vegan but not healthy. I’ve had more than a few plates of nachos and soy chorizo that were dripping in oils.

There is also the case of all the packaged foods that are vegan. You could, for instance, eat nothing but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a while. This would lead to your arteries being packed up and many chemicals from the preservatives being stored away in your body.

These were the kinds of things I ate when I first started because I thought the only alternative was making a salad for every meal. I quickly learned from the pain in my stomach that this wasn’t a good option. I then decided to search for more healthy alternatives. There are quite a few actually. Take a look at our recipes page to see what kinds of goodies that you can make that will actually be good for you. We also have a large source of recipes on a Pinterest board.

The Outer Ring

Most of us have heard fairly often that the safest and healthiest areas of a grocery store are around the outside edges. This is true even in a health store. There are many items that get placed in the snack and canned isles that are no where near healthy. The more highly processed the food is, the worse it is for you. Many of the products start out pretty healthy but have to have so many preservatives added to try to get them to last for months.

The Low Fat Method

There are many ways to eat much healthier while being vegan. Remember to use as many fresh, whole foods as you can. Prepared foods are definitely fine as long as it is something that doesn’t have added chemical preservatives. The best foods are the ones that start to break down right away like greens, fruit, vegetables. This means more trips to the store in some cases but your health will skyrocket.
