Now that we’re nearing the end, I’m getting a little tired of the old combinations and looking for juices that still taste great! I made a parsnip apple lemon juice yesterday that was bright, fresh and amazing. An instant favorite. I made it again later in the evening and added parsley- so so good. I’ll make that a lot from now on. I spent $50 on produce a couple days ago and we only have a few fruits left already. I’m going to try to use more from the garden and slowly learn to forage for wild edibles. We spent our last dollars, including Christmas gift cards we were saving, this week so I feel the need more than ever to get it through my head that money is not for wasting and squandering when it’s in abundance. We spent our last emergency $20 bill last night to go to a meetup- yes, seems a little like a bad idea. But let me tell you why it was a great idea. We met and learned from the best when it comes to eating healthy on a budget. Literally, Brandi Rollins wrote the book on this subject: Raw Foods on a Budget. Her approach, activities, worksheets, advice and innovations are spot on and very inspiring. She really got me excited knowing that I can really stretch our money a lot further than we have been by getting really resourceful, creative and yes, disciplined.
Today I looked in the pantry- (yes, what, you may ask, can you eat from the pantry on a juice fast?) and decided to make a nut milk in the Vitamix and strain it with the juice bag. I’ve never made nut milk before and figure may as well stretch what we’ve got and go for it! Let me tell you- it’s delicious. I brewed a chai tea and have been adding the milk, made from soaked sunflower seeds, almonds, macadamia nuts, and flax seeds. It is so comforting, filling and delicious. The only thing is that once I added enough water to be able to blend it and strain it, it made a TON! So while I could have used fewer nuts, now I know for next time and have plenty to share with the rest of the Kale University faculty. 🙂
Today some T-shirts already arrived that Ken had designed and ordered. He wore his new Kale U logo shirt to our local produce stand/store and apparently got mobbed by veg-heads hungry for community and information. He gave out a stack of cards, though we already have people on the waiting list for the launch party so we have to stop inviting people now. Kind of a bummer, but if it gets cold we’ll be forced to move the whole party into the house. I’m hoping it is a nice warm night, but I guess we can’t count on every night in January being perfect for an outdoor dance party, even if it is San Diego. *spoiled, I know.* I’m excited for the local buzz we’ve already created and the people who support us all over the country. Not to mention the mentors we’ve met over the last year who have really helped us with our business launch strategies- Chris Brogan, Mari Smith and others have been rays of light and such a joy to have met. Truly successful people are happy. That’s how you know them. They aren’t rich but complaining, they aren’t millionaires who never give anything back to the community. They are simple people who have their health and a smile on their face. Thus, I am a millionaire when it comes to health and happiness, today and every day.
Only a few more days to go now. Mario and Ken have decided it was time to break their fast. It’s definitely crossed my mind to break mine as well, but I don’t feel threatened or in danger at all- it’s a juice fast, not a water fast. I don’t feel pushed beyond my capacity by any means. Just my comfort zone. And that’s where I like to be.
Another Juice Fasting & Water Fasting Disclaimer
Again- I can’t stress enough how important the coffee enemas are. If you are juice fasting, you must do the enemas and/or colonics. If you are water fasting more than three days, you must be prepared to be sedentary and supervised. I am seeing a lot of people out there on the net who are trying to lead normal, energetic lives while water fasting for weeks, unsupervised! This is very dangerous!! If you want to cleanse at home without a doctor present, by all means- do a DIY juicing program in conjunction with a GI cleansing regimen. But do not attempt to juice fast without doing a lot of research and knowing the importance of colon hydrotherapy and enemas OR attempt to water fast on your own for more than 3 days OR try to water fast and go about your normal days!!
When you are juice feasting (getting plenty of juice) you can go about your normal day- just pull it back a bit with workouts as far as time, intensity and weight-bearing exercise. When you are water fasting, you should be in bed meditating and closing your eyes, resting your body and mind completely! The enemas are mandatory when juice fasting. Toxins are being released into your body that must exit or risk being reabsorbed into the blood and tissues. It not only defeats the purpose, it creates a dangerous situation in your body. And if you are coming from a Standard American Diet trying to get healthier, I wouldn’t recommend juice fasting as your first step. You need to develop an approach that is sustainable, a mindset that understands that there is no quick way to health. There are only new choices to make from here on out. Start by eating cleaner- go vegetarian, then vegan, then raw, then juice, then maybe water. Then mostly raw vegan forever after. That is how you do it. Anything else and the detoxification can be too harsh, or all for naught when you just go back to eating the SAD diet.
Decide before you undertake a special diet of any kind why you are doing it, what your goals are, and how much you know about the requirements of the chosen diet. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: YOU CAN DO ANY DIET BADLY. You can be a “bad” vegetarian, “bad” vegan, and certainly “bad” SAD eater- no matter what your diet, you need to be informed about the macronutrients, and more importantly the micronutrients that comprise your nutrition plan. There is an unhealthy obsession with the macronutrients and far too little understanding of what truly constitutes food. Macronutrients= carbs/protein/fat. Ask yourself right now- what IS protein? Where do we get the building blocks of protein? How does the body process and utilize protein? What happens when we get too much protein or the wrong kinds of protein? If you can’t answer those questions, you need to stop right now and find the answers. Micronutrients= vitamins, minerals, and thousands of phytonutrients and antioxidants that are in foods. If you don’t worry about this type of thing because you “take vitamins,” I urge you to reexamine this strategy. Most vitamin supplements are way off the mark and are difficult or nearly impossible to assimilate and are in the wrong amounts and proportions. To take a supplement with beta-carotene ignores all of the other amazing and yet undiscovered miracle properties of the whole carrot.
Juice fasting and water fasting are cleansing diets that are meant for short term detoxification, not extended periods of your life. If you are tempted to juice fast or water fast for a very long time, maybe you need to stop and examine why this type of extreme is appealing to you and think about smaller steps that may be more beneficial and sustainable. Fasting is serious and should not be abused or used as a quick weight loss strategy. It is possible to form obsessions and eating disorder-type behavior around these goals and you have to be honest and clear with yourself your intentions about health. When it comes to your body, Hippocrates has given us two rules to live by- “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine thy food;” and “First, do no harm.” Don’t do anything that could hurt your body- be smart about what you are doing and read up before you decide to put your body through something drastic. I advocate juice feasting to anyone who has been on the raw vegan path for a while and wants to step further into detoxifying and cleansing, as well as training the body and mind. Anyone else who has just started to adhere to a cleaner diet, kudos and definitely juice fast when you are ready! Everyone on earth can simply add more juices and smoothies to your fresh, clean, vegan diet and enjoy the benefits of getting healthier and healthier every day!
