With family visiting for the Holidays from Northern California and Northern Italy we set out on a 10 day tour of San Diego, Hollywood and Las Vegas.
We had a wonderful Vegan Christmas Lunch out on the porch here at our home with 80 percent Raw, including a raw pumpkin pie for dessert. The Italians loved it and even commented that this was probably the first day they have ever just eaten a plant-based diet. They’re so used to the meat and dairy lifestyle, but liked the new change of habit.
I prepared and dehydrated my famous raw persimmon-cranberry-banana cookies for snacks on the road and we headed to Balboa Park and the beaches around San Diego. The choices for healthy raw food out on the road are far and few between as many of you know, so thank goodness for making our own health snacks ahead of time.
Next we were off to Hollywood and Universal Studios to wow the Italians with that surreal side of life.
The healthy food choices were now becoming harder to find but we managed. The meat-eater’s in our group were surrounded in a comfortable envelope of restaurants, cafes and food carts where as we all needed to compromise with a menu for all to enjoy.
After observing thousands of families on vacation with kids reaching and grabbing for nourishment, I have concluded in my own opinion that about 10 in 100 people are truly healthy or on The (committed, walk the walk, practice what you speak) Journey to better health. That number is probably very high and could be actually closer to 5 percent (5 out of 100 people). The obesity and obvious illness of people in general that I observed speaks volumes about the mindset around food, addictions, cravings and the overall societal eatery choices available. Now those who read this and think “hey wait a minute, he’s talking about my diet and who does he think he is”, remember this is my opinion and is based not only on my observation but a great deal of scientific data from all over the world as well. Kale U can be a great resource for those who have a hunger for health related knowledge. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong on those numbers.
The nourishing facts of our educational journey are constantly being bombarded and discredited with the brainwashing commercials and misleading labels on almost everything I witnessed heading down peoples gullets. There are those exceptions of course and we applaud those who are stepping up to fill the much needed nutritional choices we Raw Vegan Food Lovers are seeking.
Last and obviously not least was our trip to La Vegas.
I have to say that Steve Wynn rocks when it comes to offering Vegans a choice in Vegas. He is a Vegan himself and has claimed that all of his 22+ Restaurants have a 50% vegan menu and we found that to be true, at least when we asked the staff and visited the Buffet at the Wynn Hotel.
I made an extra large batch of healthy cookies for the long road trip and these had some mushroom powders, maca, mesquite and sprouted flax seeds with blueberries added to the raw ground oats, persimmons, raisins, bananas and dates.
The Italians wanted the recipe and said that I had a future in the cookie business. I am flattered but I told them ” I’ll give you the recipe but since I love spontaneous blending, I wouldn’t want to make the same cookies twice.”
So to all those Raw Vegans out there, I solute you for your brave journey through this world of The Standard American Diet (SAD). We all make our way and are the pioneers of a new generation that is awakening up to “the whole food plant-based lifestyle”.
Some take small steps and some take quantum leaps forward.
