2012, THE YEAR OF THE JUICE!
Hi all! Suzanne here. I’m getting ready for my first long-ish juice fast. Goals are just general cleansing, achieving constant high energy, waking up earlier and easier, leaning out and setting a foundation for building healthy muscle, and hopefully seeing significant improvement if not curing my skin condition that came on about 10 years ago and never went away- redness and “goose bumps” that come and go- keratosis pilaris.
What is Keratosis Pilaris?
It’s actually quite common, men and women both get it, some people have it really bad all over their bodies. Stats say up to 50% of women have a touch of it and most don’t even know what it is. You can read more about it at this fabulous KP forum where people have been discussing it and supporting each other for years. I have a mild case- just looks like I always have goose bumps on my upper arms. It feels very dry and rough and maddeningly, it gets worse with most kinds of exfoliation! Sometimes it flares up and sometimes it spreads to my sides and hips. Doctors (if they know what it is) and dermatologists don’t have much to offer for it. In my own research I’ve found that assimilation of Vitamin A could be a factor. In unrelated articles I’ve seen that carrot juice has helped a lot of people tremendously so I’m seeing a link. Carrots will definintely be on the menu. It’s seems a little vain, I know. Of course I would love to have smooth, tan, toned arms just like every woman would. But I also recognize it as a sign, a symptom of which I need to uncover the cause and the cure. Vitamin D is also a factor and I do see great improvement with sun exposure. The worst I’ve ever had it has been when we lived in cold, dark climates.
I’ll be combining several tools in this overall treatment- intensive juicing, dry skin brushing, oil pulling, detoxifying teas, and topical treatments of coconut oil, Udo’s oil and hemp oil. I’ve tried each of these here and there, but I’m confident that putting them all together and doing them consistently will bring great results. I really would love to report that this helps because there are thousands of people who don’t ever wear shorts or tank tops because they live in a constant state of embarrassment because of their skin. Acne, psoriasis, urticaria, and other skin conditions have all be known to improve on juice fasts as well. It makes sense to me- the skin is a huge organ that is always sloughing and releasing toxins from the body. As the dry skin brushing article explained:
Dry skin brushing may be the single most important therapy you add to your detox program. Your skin is your largest elimination organ. It releases a pound of waste each day and will be the first organ to show symptoms of imbalance or toxicity.
Stepping down to a vegan diet and then a diet high in raw foods, I have seen tremendous improvement already. Graduating from an intense college program and staying out of jobs that stress me to the gills have also been key in keeping it at bay!
